Learning Is Fun at Love And Grace!

When children are educated where learning is fun, they develop a lifelong love for learning. Everyone is unique. God equipped each and every child with special gifts and talents. To find your child's special gifts, early childhood education should introduce children to numerous subjects with special emphasis on reading, writing, and simple math. Love And Grace adds to those core classes instruction in science, art, computer technology, foreign languages, physical fitness, history and social studies in a Christian environment.

Being well-rounded helps children excel! In addition to classroom study, our students get opportunities to perform before live audiences at regular events to commemorate holidays and graduation. They develop an appreciation for classical and gospel music, which is played at the academy every day. Toys at Love and Grace are abundant, safe, age-specific, and educational. Playground equipment was selected to help build healthy bodies for students from the very young to age 12. But Love and Grace students just know they are having fun singing or humming along with their favorite music, preparing to speak or dance before their families and friends at special events, and playing with puzzles, games, and toys after their hot breakfast, morning devotion, exercise, and classroom instruction.

The low child-to-teacher ratio at Love and Grace ensures that each precious child gets the attention needed to feel secure and loved from infancy to puberty. Homework assistance for older children and basic skills development for infants and preschoolers help our children thrive academically and socially. Field trips  expose children to a wide range of experiences. Learn more about Love And Grace in previous blogs at http://LoveAndGraceChristianAcademy.blogspot.com

Love And Grace accepts drop-ins to serve the community on school holidays, during spring break, and teacher work days for children over age 4 (infants and toddlers must be enrolled full time). Love And Grace is open from 6:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on the following holidays: Thanksgiving (Thursday and Friday), Christmas day, New Year's Day, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Good Friday, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Independence Day. Each child enrolled at Love And Grace full-time will be entitled to attend a maximum of 12 hours per day, five days per week (sixty hours weekly). Because teachers at Love and Grace Christian Academy help your children with their homework assignments after school each day, families have more quality time together. Here is an idea that can strengthen your family and improve your children's literacy skills - a dinnertime activity!

Reading is Fun!

Tonight at the dinner table, read something out loud to your family. Tomorrow night, let another family member read something - a news story, a bible verse, a poem, a cereal box panel, history, humor, anything! Each night, a different family member can read a selection. Imagine the wide range of subjects your family will read in 365 days! What a stimulating way to have your children develop good reading habits and public speaking skills!

At Love and Grace Christian Academy, we read aloud to our students during our daily devotional services and often let the school-age children take turns reading to the group. They love it! Each classroom has its own library, well stocked with books, games, puzzles, and crafts to make education fun.

Family Involvement for School Success!

Family involvement promotes school success for every child of every age. Research by Harvard Family Research Project proved that family involvement helps children get ready to enter school and to excel as students.
  • Children whose parents read to them at home recognize letters of the alphabet and write their names sooner than those whose parents do not.
  • Children whose parents teach them how to write words are able to identify letters and connect them to speech sounds.
  • Children whose parents use complex sentences in their everyday conversations achieve high scores on literacy-related tasks in kindergarten.
Parental participation is encouraged at Love and Grace Christian Academy. Family involvement promotes elementary school children's success.

  • Children in grades K-3 whose parents participate in school activities have high quality work habits and task orientation.
  • Children whose parents provide support with homework perform better in the classroom.
  • Children whose parents explain educational tasks are more likely to participate in class, seek help from the teacher when needed, and monitor their own work.
Parents work with the staff at Love and Grace Christian Academy to help children to be healthy spiritually and physically and to excel academically. Love and Grace enrolls children from six weeks to 12 years of age. All children are engaged in activities designed to help them reach their full potential.

Kid-Friendly Veggies and Fruits!

At Love and Grace, we encourage healthy diets and provide breakfast, a hot lunch, and a healthy afternoon snack every day. Our garden shows children how vegetables and fruits grow. Encourage children to eat vegetables and fruits by making it fun! Provide healthy ingredients and let kids help with preparation, based on their age and skills. Kids may try foods they avoided in the past if they help to make them. Below are three fun recipes to try with your young chefs.

1. Smoothie Creations:  Blend yogurt or milk with fruit pieces and crushed ice. Use fresh, frozen, canned, and even overripe fruits. Try bananas, berries, peaches, and/or pineapple. If you freeze the fruit first, you can even skip the ice!

2. Delicious Dippers:  Children love to dip their foods. Whip up a quick dip for veggies with yogurt and seasons such as herbs or garlic. Serve with raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or cauliflower. Fruit chunks go great with a yogurt and cinnamon or vanilla dip.

3. Caterpillar Kabobs:  Assemble chunks of melon, apple, orange, and pear on skewers for a fruity kabob. For a raw veggie version, use vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, squash, sweet peppers, or tomatoes.

Put your kids in charge. Ask your child to name new veggie or fruit creations. Let them arrange raw veggies or fruits into a fun shape or design. It is really fun to decorate a baked potato with sliced cherry tomatoes, peas, and cheese.

Be a healthy role model for children. Here are ten tips from the USDA:

1. Show by example. Eat vegetables, fruits, and whole grains with meals and as snacks.
2. Go food shopping together. Discuss where the foods come from and teach children health choices.
3. Offer the same foods for everyone. Stop being a "short order cook" by making different dishes to please children. Plan family meals together.
4. Cut food into fun and easy shapes with cookie cutters.
5. Reward children with attention, not food.
6. Talk about fun and happy things at mealtime. Turn off the TV and phone. Make meals stress-free.
7. Listen to your child. If your child says she or he is hungry, offer a small healthy snack between meals.
8. Limit screen time like TV and computer games.
9. Be a good role model. Try new foods yourself. Offer new foods (one at a time) at the beginning of a meal when your child is very hungry. Avoid lecturing or forcing your child to eat.
10. Make physical activity fun for the whole family. Walk, run and play with your children. Set a good example by being physically active and using safety gear like bike helmets.

At Love and Grace Christian Academy, our students play outside every day except in inclement weather. They love our fully-equipped playground!

At Love and Grace, we know that children learn teamwork and good sharing skills as they play ballgames on our large lawn and by taking turns on the swings and monkey bars. We help children to have better behavior though loving discipline. Discipline works best with a balance of love, respect, clearly defined roles, and understanding. Here are some secrets of effective discipline:

1. Make the rules clear. Children do best when they know what to expect. Talk about family rules, explaining the consequences clearly. For example, for a rule such as "Take care of your belongings," you might tell children that if they leave their bikes out, they won't get to ride them the next day. As youngsters learn to read, write down rules and put them on your refrigerator as a reminder. For instance, at Love and Grace, we read the playground safety rules aloud to the children every time we take them outside.

2. Be consistent and firm. You can expect children to "test" the rules from time to time. When they do, try to stand your ground and apply the set consequences.

3. Give positive feedback. Try to focus more on what your children do right than what they do wrong. This will encourage them to try harder to behave. So, when you see behavior you want repeated, give children positive feedback. Example: "Thanks for hanging up your coat and backpack!"

Better Brains for Babies!

Love and Grace maintains low pupil/teacher ratios to ensure that every child gets individual attention, especially our infants and toddlers. Research tells us:
  • The brain is not fully developed at birth
  • Many important foundations of brain development happen in the first three years of life
  • Early positive interactions with nurturing adults are vital to healthy brain development
  • What children see, hear, smell, taste and touch affect early brain development
  • Early childhood experiences are the foundations for future success in school, work, family, and community

SUMMER 2013 will be something that your children will talk about, write about, and if they have a really good time, they will remember it forever. Bring your children to tour Love and Grace Christian Academy, where they will be kept safe in a nurturing environment, taken on fun and educational field trips (ages 4 and up), and encouraged to prosper spiritually, academically, and physically, according to their ages and unique talents and abilities. They will thank you for their "Around the World Summer Camp" experience!

Thanks to all Love and Grace Christian Academy parents
who care enough to give their children the very best
in day care and summer camp experiences.

All summer, students at Love And Grace Christian Academy participate in classroom learning, enjoy regular field trips, take swimming lessons, and enjoy playing on three large, well-equipped playgrounds. Children continue to spend part of every day on academically enriching activities during the summer, some of which are so much fun that kids might not notice how much they are learning. See below some highlights from previous summers!

Tyric, age 12, built his own roller ball game since school was out.  He also made a five foot by two foot model of a city, equipped with every convenience.

Two-year-old James has learned all the words to "This Little Light of Mine," and he enjoys singing it to the delight of his class.

Sade surprised her teacher, Ms. Teresa, this week with her exceptional artistic abilities. She drew a whale.

All the children ages four and up had an enjoyable learning experience on their trip to the library for an animal show - Kopp's Kritters.  They learned about and actually interacted with a rabbit, a snake, and a slow-moving tortoise.

Love and Grace Children love Chick-Fil-A for its annual "Cow Appreciation Day." Chick-Fil-A gives free meals to customers who participate by dressing up head to toe like a cow. What fun! Our children used arts and crafts supplies to make cow masks and create cow spots: black ones for white t-shirts and white spots for black t-shirts. Our  children arrived at the academy wearing black and white and making impressive "moooo" sounds.

Summer field trips at Love and Grace have included the Hands-on Fair, a reptile show, and a festival - all in one week.  There are always many educational activities and fun field trips, with lots of fun and games in between.

Fun with family and neighbors!  Love and Grace Christian Academy sometimes sponsors cookouts. Your children will enjoy bouncing in the Moonwalk and sliding, swinging, climbing the monkey bars and playing water games. Nothing beats a merry-go-round ride on a summer evening, unless it's a juicy barbecue hamburger or fish dinner with an icy Coke.

Can you think of anything more enjoyable than hearing your children laugh?  You deserve an evening with no worries about preparing dinner or dishes to wash.  A summer celebration with our families and neighbors is such fun! Love and Grace Christian Academy sometimes has fish fries, barbecues and holiday dinners and invites our students and their families as well as the community!

Summer is flying by. Now is the time to make arrangements for the coming school year.  Open House at Love And Grace Christian Academy is happening soon. Children enrolled at Love and Grace have their spiritual and academic development carefully tended by Christian administrators, John and Cleotha Griffith, education and childcare professionals who have provided exceptional services to DeKalb County residents for over 30 years.

Thousands of children were carefully nurtured by the Griffiths at Love And Grace Christian Academy and at Love Thy Children Christian Childcare Center. The Griffiths now give their full attention to Love And Grace students. You are invited to tour our academy and meet Mrs. Griffith, if your family needs childcare for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary school for students up to third grade.  We also provide before and after school programs with extra curricular activities.

Love And Grace gives children a spiritually based educational experience using A Beka Christian-based program. Children from newborns to age 12 are accepted.  Our hours of operation are from 6:30a.m. until 8:00p.m. Monday though Friday. Each child who is enrolled full-time is entitled to attend a maximum of five days per week, up to 12 hours per day. Parents can choose their own schedule.

The academy provides transportation to and from area public schools, and we are at your service for teacher work days and school holidays.

Love And Grace is conveniently located at 4164 Rainbow Drive, Decatur GA 30034. Our rates are reasonable, and GACAPS is accepted. Give us a call at (404) 288-2350.

Every day begins with morning devotion at Love And Grace. Children receive nutritious meals, including a hot breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. Each area in the academy is designed and equipped for children's safety and development according to their ages. Our low ratio of students to teachers ensures that infants, toddlers, preschoolers and elementary school students have the attention they need to thrive. After schoolers receive homework assistance so that parents and children can enjoy quality time together after their long days apart.  Following homework, students enjoy a game of baseball or playing on playground equipment and computer fun. Television is kept to a minimum, but we occasionally enjoy a Disney classic or Christian cartoons like Veggie Tales.

Each area of Love And Grace has a good library with books and educational games suitable to the age groups that use them. Following structured classes for the little ones, and upon completion of after schoolers' homework assignments, children spend time outside daily except during inclement weather.  Teachers engage the children in educational games, and toys are everywhere!  The academy is such a loving, fun-filled environment that some children cry when Mommy and Daddy come for pick-up. They sometimes persuade their parents to let them stay just 15 minutes longer.

Thank you for visiting our blog! We are excited about sharing news from Love And Grace with academy parents and the community. Photos, videos, and a virtual tour of the academy will be added, so please visit often.  Our photographs feature present and former DeKalb County residents who attended Love And Grace during their formative years. You may recognize some of them, and you may even be one of the children whose parents cared enough to place you in the Griffths' competent hands while they worked. One of Love And Grace's former students is a teacher at the academy now!

There is nothing more rewarding than helping children grow spiritually and academically to live the lives that God ordained for them.  A positive, well-rounded early school environment helps promote a lifelong love for learning.  For the Griffiths, providing the community with quality childcare and education is more than a business; it is their mission.

We look forward to serving you!

Falling Into Learning at Love And Grace

Autumn is an exciting time of year for Love And Grace Christian Academy. Thank you for visiting our blog to share the joy. We learn, worship, and play together at our conveniently located, award-winning academy for children from 6 weeks to 12 years of age. Fall is a beautiful season with holidays children enjoy learning about and celebrating with their classmates and families.  This harvest season, Love And Grace students are learning about plants and animals, multicultural holidays, fire safety, and the importance of a healthy diet and exercise. Our autumn blog carries information about our fall curriculum, planned celebrations, and Ms. Griffith's helpful parenting tips.

THANKS, DAVION!  It was terrific for Davion and his mom to bring red, brown, and yellow leaves to his class. He and his mother collected the leaves one gorgeous autumn day. Davon's classmates arranged the colorful leaves into attractive collages on paper and display them in our windows for all of the academy's students and visitors to enjoy. As the children glued the leaves to the paper, Ms. Angie pointed out how leaves differ from one tree to another and discussed the changes plants undergo during various seasons. The wonders of nature declare that God loves diversity. Each tree is different, and no two leaves are alike, even from the same tree. Each leaf has its own unique beauty like children do!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. ERIN! We rejoice with one of our favorite teachers over the birth of her lovely daughter, Janiyah.  Children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward" ~Psalm 127:3. The Love And Grace family gives praise with Ms. Erin over her family's marvelous reward.

WELCOME, KARISSA, JACKSON, and MASON! We are pleased that your parents selected Love And Grace Christian Academy. Karissa loves playing and learning with other toddlers, and Mason enjoys the toys, books, and crafts our four-year-olds use. As Karissa and Mason mature in our care, they will be instructed in basic reading, writing, math and science using the A Beka Christian-based program and Scholastic's "Let's Find Out" early learning material. Our students delight in using the computer labs, well-equipped playgrounds, and libraries.

Love And Grace students have a school garden; they go on educational field trips, and thrill their families at school talent shows for certain holidays.  Do you think you cannot afford such a rich environment for your child?  We accept Georgia CAPS and work with parents experiencing financial hardships in order to make Christian school accessible for more children in our "village." Love And Grace has open enrollment, affordable rates, and an incentive program for new enrollees and those who refer them. More information is in our Back to School blog under the "Enrollment Information" subtitle at this link: http://goo.gl/s0SVH . Please feel free to call with questions and to arrange a tour.

First Day at a New School

New students adjust quickly at Love And Grace where each child is treasured. Mrs. Griffith has 30 years experience in early childhood education. Hundreds of DeKalb County children who arrived in the Griffith's care as babes and toddlers remained until they reached the maximum age. They enroll in the academy's excellent summer program as well as before and after school care with transportation to area schools. Our low student-to-teacher ratio with dedicated teachers and staff ensure that children get the individual attention they need to feel happy and secure and to thrive academically. Specific information on the academy's programs and curriculum is available in our introductory blog, "Summertime Fun and Learning," at this link: http://goo.gl/khIGN.

GARDENING BUILDS MATH AND SCIENCE SKILLS

Our garden has greens and pumpkins ready for harvest! Our children learn about horticulture by planting seeds, tending the garden, and gathering a yield of delicious, nutritious fruits and vegetables.  Raising a garden with the children teaches them about God's loving provisions that we rely on all of our lives.  They learn about the origin of food and the importance of patience as we await the first tiny stalks. By counting seeds as they plant and spacing the seed pods evenly, our students learn math skills. Raising a garden gives an excellent opportunity for children to learn about weather and its relevance to agriculture. Students work together in teams, which is important throughout their school years. Teamwork is a important for success in most careers. Love And Grace toddlers are taken to the garden to enhance their sensory perceptions. They like to touch and smell ripe tomatoes and cabbage leaves, then go inside to draw and color food that decorates our academy and refrigerators at home. Science, math, and appreciation for God and teamwork all happen in Love And Grace's garden. Love And Grace introduces children to math and science in a way they can understand, and hands-on learning is fun!

ANATOMY ON THEIR LEVEL

"Look, Mommy, a skeleton!" We hear that exclamation frequently when parents and children come to Love And Grace for a tour of our facility, which is conveniently located at 4164 Rainbow Drive, Decatur GA 30034. That is at the intersection of Rainbow Drive and Wesley Chapel Road. Phone (404) 288-2350.

An organization donated an adult-sized skeleton to Love And Grace to help our children learn about human anatomy.  (Love And Grace is a non-profit organizations. Donations are appreciated and tax-deductible.)  X-rays of the skeletal system are in our windows, but not to celebrate Halloween. Learning about bones and seeing how fragile they are help children recognize the importance of seat belts, playground safety. Big sisters or brothers like Amad learn it is important to be gentle with younger brothers and sisters. Discussing the delicate bone structure of our anatomy also makes children appreciate the fact that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Ps.139:14) by a loving Creator who is definitely interested in the details.  The children are also learning about fire safety - stop, drop and roll. Love And Grace has regular fire drills.

LEARNING AS WE PLAY

Love And Grace students learn as they play in addition to having structured class time.  From toddlers to pre-teens, our children enjoy nature walks and the academy's playgrounds every day except during inclement weather. After-school students receive homework assistance and incentives to do well in school, like an occasional afternoon movie. Our students use "Keys for Kids" daily devotionals to help them discover who God wants them to be. Children learn from the real-life issues presented in that great collection of stories. When Angel and other after-schoolers take turns reading aloud to the group, they improve their reading skills and prepare for public speaking. Sada is a good listener, and Mariah loves to lead songs or give us a solo. Our three and four-year-olds are learning about animal behavior.  In the fall, squirrels hide acorns and birds fly to warmer climates. Christina and Emanuel find counting acorns entertaining! Animals grow winter coats, and people dress in layers. Days may start cool and grow warm by afternoon or vice versa. Learning about weather and seasons is fun when lessons include nature walks, arts and crafts. Little James, Elijah, or Skyla might even decide to become a meteorologist.

Children at Love And Grace have an assortment of building blocks. Young children build houses or entire towns using large, soft, colorful blocks in various sizes and shapes. Our older children enjoy numerous construction games and tools and wooden building blocks. Mason built a roller coaster that helped him to understand gravity.

Children love to learn about the world around them, and this pleases our Father.
"The entire earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein."
(Ps. 24:1)

CELEBRATIONS, MEETINGS, FUNDRAISERS

Love And Grace's personnel, students, and families traditionally share a Thanksgiving luncheon and a winter party to celebrate Christmas and other holidays during fall and winter. Celebrating multicultural holidays is an important lesson in social studies. Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are traditional holidays. Children are taught the significance of each by a series of fun activities.  But other holidays are important for some people:  Hanukkah, Diwali, Los Posads, Islamic New Year, and Kwanzaa. The Bible says we are to "rejoice with those who rejoice" (Rom. 12:15).  Love And Grace children are learning abut those holidays, also. Christmas cards and 2012 calendars are are autumn fundraiser products, and orders are being placed now. Parents are encouraged to support fundraisers and attend functions at the academy. Fundraisers ensure that our children continue to have the best equipment, toys, teaching aids, educational computer games, children's music CDs, interesting field trips, and more.

CELEBRATIONS!
THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON
CHRISTMAS PARTY

Performing Arts

Love And Grace and our children appreciate parents who help bridge the gap between home and school by occasionally visiting the academy and participating in celebrations and fundraisers. Family involvement promotes school success. Our last gathering was a fish fry and car wash in August, which was announced in our "Summertime Fun and Learning" blog in July (use the link above, or access all our blogs from the handy index on the blog's left margin).  Students are proud to show family members their artwork and the wide assortment of books, toys, and games they enjoy every day. Specific dates for events at the academy are posted on the bulletin board at our sign-out desk.

MS. GRIFFITH'S PARENTING TIPS

Regular hand washing is probably the most important habit for maintaining good health during the flu season or any time. A visit to the supermarket reveals a multitude of regular soaps, antibacterial soaps and gels. It is best to limit the use of antibacterial products because they kill both good and bad bacteria, and the good bacteria is a part of the protective system; overuse may actually decrease ability to fight infection. If you purchase antibacterial soaps, avoid those that contain triclosan, which has been registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a health risk. Its long term effects on humans is not known. Whereas some early care and educational professionals use hand sanitizers as an alternative to soap and water because they are easy to use, Love And Grace uses them only if we are on a field trip and no other alternative exists. Children and the academy are kept clean to reduce illness and absenteeism. They are taught to do sneezes or coughs into their elbow area, not their hands.  Cleanliness is a way to care for the temple.

Activity:  Pour 3-4 cups of flour into a paper or plastic bag. Have your child dip his hand into the bag of flour then shake hands with family members. Explain that germs, like the flour, spread from person to person although he cannot see the germs. Next, have a child dip her hand into the flour and wash her hands before shaking hands with family members. Children will understand the difference that hand washing makes.

Reading together strengthens families and stimulates good reading habits in children. At dinner, family members should take turns reading something aloud - news stories, cereal box panels, history, humor, anything! When parents establish a reading routine with their children, they provide more family bonding time and an opportunity for children's vocabulary and preliteracy skills to grow. Independent evaluations found that children whose parents read to them regularly recognize letters of the alphabet and write their names sooner.  Having older children read to the family strengthens their literacy and confidence. Why not print the Love And Grace blogs and read them at dinner?

Mom and Daughter Exercise Together

Be a healthy role model.  Children learn best by example. Go food shopping together and choose healthy foods. Discuss your choices and let your child make a nutritious selection.  Get creative in the kitchen. Cut food into shapes with cookie cutters. Prepare simple recipes together like trail mixes. Stop being a short-order cook. Offer choices before preparing meals, i.e., "Would you like broccoli or cauliflower today?" Have everyone in the family eat the same food. Reward your child with attention, not food. Never offer sweets as a reward. It teaches children that sweets are preferable. Talk about happy subjects during meals, and really listen to your child. Encourage physical activity, and set a good example by being physically active and using safety gear. Try new foods together. Introduce new menu choices one at a time. It is best to introduce children to new foods at the start of the meal while they are hungry, but avoid lecturing or forcing children to eat.

Love and Grace Serves Nutritious Meals and Snacks

Daily physical activity is part of a child's foundation for a long, healthy life. Helping children adopt an active lifestyle early will have a tremendous impact on their physical, intellectual and emotional development.

Creepy/Crawly exercises help babies get around and use the right and left sides of their bodies at the same time. This helps later with reading and writing skills.  (1) Lay the baby on her tummy on a carpet of smooth, clean surface; (2) Place a favorite toy in front of her, just out of reach; (3) Encourage her to go get it. (4) Let the baby reach and retrieve the toy, but then make a game of moving it out of reach again; (5) Repeat the game as long as the baby stays interested.

Hands, Bellies, Toes is an exercise enjoyed by toddlers through age three.  The game helps children identify body parts, flexibility, and understand the concept of up, down, low, and high. (1) Stand facing your child and beginning slowly, call out the names of the three body parts that are in the title; (2) Ask your child to touch each body part as you call out the names; (3) Once your child is successful, mix it up - the order of the body parts; (4) Change the tempo at which you call out the body parts - sometimes slow and sometimes fast; (5) When your child gets ready, play Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes. (6) Once again, change the order of parts and the tempo at which you call out the body parts. Guaranteed giggles!

Mirror Game is a cooperative game for ages three through six. that encourages social/emotional development. Children have to do with their bodies what their eyes are seeing. This helps with writing, among other things. (1) Stand facing your child; (2) Tell him you want him to do exact what you do, just as though he were your reflection in the mirror; (3) Begin by making slow movements that you can do in place, like lowering and raising arms, nodding your head, or clapping your hands. Take turns being the leader; (4) Help your child be more flexible by bending and straightening at the waist, stretching arms overhead or slowly reaching for your toes (keeping knees slightly bent); (5) To help muscle strength, lift and lower the heels or do deep knee bends; (6) For healthy hearts, run or jump in place, stopping occasionally to rest.

CONGRATULATIONS on your desire to help your children adopt healthy habits at an early age: regular hand washing, reading, a nutritious diet, and daily exercise!

Sleep safely. The peak time for SIDS is 2 to 4 months, although it can and does happen later in the first year of life. The risk of SIDS can be reduced by up to 40% by putting babies on their backs to sleep.  Use safety-approved cribs and mattresses. Keep cribs free of extra items: toys, stuffed animals, and excess bedding. Only one baby should be in a crib. Never allow second-hand smoke around your baby, especially while the infant sleeps. The baby's room temperature should be comfortable for a lightly-clothed adult. Tuck your baby's blanket at the foot of the bed and allow it to extend no further than the child's chest. Check for any recalls on your baby's bedding. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has a site online listing recalls on infant and child's products (excluding toys) at this link http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/child.html .

Back to School at Love And Grace Christian Academy!

Love And Grace Christian Academy welcomes our returning students.  We are currently enrolling children from newborn through age 12. The academy proudly celebrates 40 years serving this community.  Using the A Beka program, our students thrive academically in a nurturing, fun-filled environment that is spiritually enriching. More information about the academy is available in our July blog at this link:  "Summertime Fun and Learning at Love And Grace - http://alturl.com/tsvz5

Enrollment Information:  If your family needs quality childcare, elementary school, or before and after school transport and care for public school children in our area, please call to schedule a tour of the facility and meet with our director, Ms. Cleotha Griffith.  The academy's enrollment incentive program is underway now.  It takes a village to raise a child.  We appreciate your help introducing our award-winning services to families.

40 Yeas of Excellence in Early Education:

Parent involvement is encouraged at Love And Grace.  PTA meetings on fourth Tuesday of each month.  Parents are welcome at any time and encouraged to participate in regularly-scheduled family/school activities.

What I did this summer:

Summer Camp at Love And Grace was a huge success. Children are often asked to write an essay or give an oral review of their summer vacation for teachers and classmates.  Love And Grace students continued academic enrichment and enjoyed many fun, educational field trips. Our 4 to 12 year-olds did gardening, took swimming lessons, went skating and to the movies, animal shows, restaurants, and much more. Students also enjoyed arts and crafts and computer fun.  Love And Grace students shared what they enjoyed most about their summer camp experience, and a few of their favorite memories are listed below.

Sade, age 6, said her favorite field trip was to Cottle Strawberry Farms. Children picked strawberries all morning. They learned how strawberry crops grow and the importance of rich soil, clean air and water. When students returned to the academy, Mr. and Mrs. Griffith made strawberry smoothies for everyone. YUM! At the end of the day, each child took home a crate of fresh strawberries for their families.

Emanuel said his favorite summer camp activity was playing with all the toys and games that Love And Grace has.  He also likes drawing and painting.  Emanuel displays his creations on bulletin boards and windows at school.

Jordynne, age 3, thinks her swimming lessons were tops!  One morning, Jordynne and her mom arrived after the bus had already left for swimming classes at the YMCA.  That was a major crisis for the budding aquatic star, and her mother vowed it would not happen again!  Learning water safety is important for all children.   Swimming is an exercise that many people enjoy throughout their lives.  Our bodies are temples for the Holy Spirit.  Proper nutrition and physical fitness are emphasized at Love And Grace.  The school serves children delicious, balanced meals and snacks and has three well-equipped playgrounds.

Ahmad, age 5, loved Watermelon Day at Love And Grace. Sweet, ripe melons were cut for the children to enjoy at our picnic tables before spending time on the playground.  It gave another opportunity to talk about growing plants and to glorify God for abundant provisions. Cool fun!

Ms. Erin, a teacher, was pleased that our summer field trips and lesson plan focused on animal and plant biology. The children enjoyed a field trip to the Bio Bus in July, where they participated in helium experiments and touched a large millipede. They also learned more about hydrogen gas and sea animals.  Science, math, and all subjects are presented to Love And Grace students in a way that develops a lifelong love for learning.

Working in the academy's vegetable garden helps Love And Grace students understand agriculture. The children helped Mr. Griffith pick cantaloupes, zucchini, okra, tomatoes, and banana peppers. The  fresh vegetables were then stir-fried and shared with students and staff.  We always pray together before meals and snacks at Love And Grace, teaching children to honor God, from whom all blessings flow.

Elijah, 11 months, delights in playing ball with his teacher.  He throws the ball, and Ms. Teressa retrieves it repeatedly.  This social game helps babies develop expectations about familiar events and develop hand-eye coordination and agility. Children learn to grasp objects between three and seven months of age, but the whole-arm coordination that allows them to roll or throw a ball at something (or someone) usually occurs somewhere between 18 months and three years. If Elijah keeps practicing, he may become a skilled ball player like James is.  James, age 2, enjoys baseball and basketball. Love And Grace students also participate in Tae Bo exercises after devotion every morning, even little Elijah!

God blesses each child with special gifts.  The low student to teacher ratio at Love And Grace guarantees that children get individual attention. Our goal is to help children discover and develop their unique talents. Love And Grace preschoolers enjoy dressing up as firemen, police officers, business persons, and historic figures.  Skyla, age 2, displays natural management skills. She likes pretending to be the assistant teacher for her class.  An enjoyable early school environment like Skyla has helps instill a lifelong love for learning.

Love And Grace Christian Academy proudly serves the our community's children from infancy to pre-teens.

Parenting Tips

1.  Parental Involvement:  Parents want their children to have a solid support system. Getting involved with your children's school unites the two most important environments children have - home and school. The National Education Association reports that parental involvement results in fewer absences, improved behavior and increased academic success.  This is true regardless of parents' income, education level or cultural background.  Love And Grace's director and teachers look forward to partnering with parents to educate and nurture our next generation.

2.  Hygiene:  Reducing the spread of germs helps eliminate absenteeism due to illness.  Love And Grace cleans toys and surfaces throughout the day.  Children should wash their hands frequently with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice).  We encourage children to do the elbow cough (sneeze into elbows, not hands) to reduce the spread of germs.

3.  Healthy Habits:  Children should get proper rest, eat nutritious meals, and develop self esteem by being prepared for classwork.  Homework assistance for after school children at Love And Grace ensures that students arrive at school every day feeling confident.
